The Ironton Farmers Market is still riding the momentum of June’s grand opening, and more groups are joining in

The August celebration brought out the American Association of University Women selling used books at the event with the Ironton High School Varsity Singers and the Cooke Family Singers providing entertainment.

“This is a good day,” Sam Heighton, market manager. “We have good weather, good entertainment and good produce. We are going to try and have an event like this once a month. It’s getting bigger, but we wouldn’t even be able to have a celebration of this magnitude if it weren’t for Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.”

Tammy Handshaw had a plethora of fruits and vegetables for sale at her booth.

“It’s going really good today,” she said. “I have been at all the markets and it has definitely picked up since word started getting around. My customers just aren’t local anymore; they are from all around the Tri-State.”

Carol Allen, chair of Ironton In Bloom, said its annual bulb fundraiser, which kicked off Saturday, was going well.

“We are selling some and some people have given us bulbs to plant for them,” she said. “For this being our first Saturday we have gotten a lot of donations.”

Aside from improving and maintaining the flowers already placed around Ironton, IIB’s intention is to put a pocket park at Ironton Memorial Hall in conjunction with other organizations.

“We want to create a place where people can come and sit, have receptions and weddings and things like that,” Allen said.

The market will be open in downtown Ironton from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., unless sold out before, every Friday and Saturday until the end of October.
