Phyllis Gillen

Phyllis Jean Dudding Gillen, 78 of Ironton, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at her residence. The Ashland, Ky., native was born July 23, 1934, the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnus Vanhoose Fitzpatrick.

Mrs. Gillen was a graduate of Ironton High School and a homemaker. She was 1953 homecoming queen and achieved master’s level at duplicate bridge, dancing and homemaking. She was a member of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lt. Colonel James O. Dudding; grandson, Louis Lodge Weber IV; and granddaughter, Mary Anastasia Weber.

She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Lou Dudding Weber of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, James Orville and Elizabeth Jane Dudding, Jr. of Ironton; grandsons, Jerime Dudding of Beckley, W.Va. and James Fitzpatrick Weber of Bradenton; two brothers, James Fitzpatrick of Jeffersonville, Ind. and George Fitzpatrick Venice, Fla.; two great grandsons, Kade Dudding and Ryder Dudding, both of Fairmont, W.Va.; and special friends, David and JoAnne McCown and John and Charlene Thomas, all of Ironton.

There will be a memorial service at a later date at the convenience of the family. Phillips Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Irene Clay

Irene Frances Clay, 84, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native was born July 10, 1928 the daughter of the late Stephen Edward Hodnett and Bertha Silverstein Hodnett.

Mrs. Clay was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton and the Catholic Women’s Club. She was a homemaker and worked for the Dimension Cable Company for several years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by son, Peter Clay; grandson, Tommy Clay; brother, Steve Hodnett; and sister, Ann Proski.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, George D. Clay of Ironton; daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Mike Hanifin of Charlotte, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Nikki Clay of Ironton; daughter, Teresa DiCemzo of Pittsburgh, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Regina Clay of Ironton; son and daughter-in-law, George and Nan Clay II of Peoria, Ill.; daughter, Amy Clay of Ironton; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren

Funeral Mass will be 3 p.m. Monday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ironton, with Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of the service Monday at the church. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Ronald Sellards

Ronald Keith “Crowbar” Sellards, 60, of South Point, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va. Mary Brown

Mary Lois Brown 94, of Chesapeake, died Saturday, May 25, 2013, in River’s Bend Health Care. Arrangements are pending at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.schneidergriffin.com.

 

Harriet Edwards

Harriet Isabelle Edwards, 82, of Ironton, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013, at Wexner Medical Center Ross Heart Hospital at The Ohio State University in Columbus. The Logan, W.Va., native was born April 30, 1931, a daughter to the late D.B. and Elizabeth (Martin) Cameron.

Ms. Edwards attended Ironton schools and later went on to earn her LPN. Harriet later went on to work as a nurse at Ironton General Hospital and retired from River Valley Nursing Home in Sheridan. She was also a faithful member of New Jerusalem Christian Center and gifted and talented psalmist.

Harriet is survived by eight children, Verneeda Starks of Columbus, Richard (Pat) Edwards of Southfield, Mich., William (Marie) Edwards of Burlington, Randolph (Christy) of Kitts Hill, Cynthia Short of Columbus, Melanie (Jim) Brettnacher of Mulberry, Ind., Jonda Thomas of Columbus, and Alva A.J. (Beth) Edwards of Ironton; a brother, Dezar Cameron of Columbus; 22 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Harriet is preceded in death by a son, Charles Wayne Edwards; five sisters, Anna Mae Davis, Betty Jean Cameron, Ruth L. (Brickey) Pritchett, Ruby King and Dorothy Mills; and a brother John Cameron.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at New Jerusalem Christian Center, with Bishop Kenneth Lisath officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

The family has requested that donations be made to the Ashland Bellefonte Cancer Center, 122 St Christopher Drive, Ashland, KY 41101.
