The Bobcats won their second game in three weeks as they upended the Northwest Mohawks 13-2 Friday in the season finale for both teams.

Green (3-7) not only won two of its last three games but the only loss last week was 18-6 to heavily-favored Oak Hill.

"The last four weeks of the season the kids came together and started clicking," Green coach Dan McDavid said. "That’s a credit to the seniors who played hard and didn’t let us get down. We appreciate their leadership, and it’s nice to win for them and help those guys coming back to get ready for next year."

Brad Bainer’s 3-yard touchdown run and Ryan Boggs’ conversion kick gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead with 9:59 left in the half.

Northwest got a score with 7:32 left when Corey Strickland tackled Bainer in the end zone for a safety and it was 7-2.

But Green’s defense proved too strong and the offense generated another touchdown with 9:04 left to play when Alex Hart ran 1-yard for a touchdown.

"The defense played great. They had one first down and it was by a penalty. Our defense ate them alive," McDavid said. "On offense, we took what they gave us. We had pretty good balance on offense, but they played pretty good on defense."

Green had one drive end on an interception in the end zone, one stop on a fourth-and-inches play inside the 5,

‘The story of the game was our defense," McDavid said.

Kyle Darnell had 10 tackles to lead the defense. Brad Bainer and Tim Willis and had seven tackles, Allen Salyers had five tackles a key quarterback sack, Chris Williams a fumble recovery and an interception, and inside linebacker Steve Thomas an interception.

"It doesn’t show in the stats but Ron Otworth, Nick Eskridge, and Jason Patton were a big part of our defense because they did their job on the defensive line. They kept people off our linebackers," McDavid said.

Northwest finishes the season 3-7.

Portsmouth 28, Wheelersburg 21

PORTSMOUTH – So much for the number one ranking.

After weeks of sitting at No. 2, the Wheelersburg Pirates finally climbed to No. 1 in the Associated Press Division IV poll last week. But the stay lasted only one week as the Pirates were beaten 28-21 by arch-rival Portsmouth Friday night.

The loss was the first in 10 games for Wheelersburg and probably knocked them down to fifth in the computer ratings.

The Trojans, 7-3, used the win to vault over three teams and into second place. They are scheduled to host Germantown Valley View in the first round of the playoffs.

Portsmouth’s defense did the most damage to the Pirates as the secondary intercepted Andy Gill five times. Jonah Booker returned one for a 47-yard touchdown that put the Trojans ahead 7-0.

Wheelersburg tied the game with a 74-yard drive in just five plays. The score came when tight end Mike Yelley recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Booker’s second interception – he had three on the night – gave Portsmouth the ball at the Pirates 25. Quarterback Greg Estep hit D. J. Carter in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown and the Trojans led 14-7.

Wheelersburg had a drive to the Trojan 26 only to have Booker pick off another pass.

The Pirates began the second half with a 74-yard, 11-play drive capped by Gill’s 6-yard run and the game was tied 14-14.

But Portsmouth answered quickly as Estep hit Jay Stombock on a 76-yard touchdown pass with 1:45 left in the quarter.

The Pirates tied the game on Luke Emnett’s 18-yard touchdown run with 9:24 to play.

The decisive touchdown came with 7:21 to play when Estep hit Jeremy Hamrick on a 7-yard pass.

Wheelersburg had one final drive thwarted when C. J. Cameron tipped a pass and Eric Wamsley caught the deflection for an interception.
