The Ironton Board of Education approved the purchase of a new handicap accessible bus Monday night.

The bus, which cost more than $100,000, was purchased out of federal stimulus funds that are earmarked for special education.

Before this purchase, the school district had only one handicap accessible bus, which meant it would have to borrow from another district whenever it needed to transport handicapped students to different places at the same time, Superintendent Dean Nance said.

The new 78-passenger bus is safer and it allows for a more flexible schedule, Nance said.

The school board also accepted a bid from Tom Sexton and Associates for the purchase of furniture for the new Ironton High School.

The board accepted the lowest bid offered, which was for about $270,000 for teachers’ and office furniture, media center and miscellaneous other furniture, Nance said.

In other business, the Ironton Board of Education also:

Discussed the future sale of the Central School property. The school was recently demolished in preparation for it to be sold eventually. Clean-up at the site has yet to be completed.

The land will be divided into eight residential lots.

No action was taken about the property.

“The board will determine the way that needs to be sold,” Nance said.

Approved an easement at the new high school for Columbia Gas.

Approved a revision to the district’s graduation with honors policy.
