Rusty Yaniko tossed a five-hitter, struck out 11, and walked just one as the St. Joe Flyers beat the Rock Hill Redmen 11-4 Thursday.

"Rusty threw well. He set the tone for the game. He threw 100 pitches and most of those were strikes. Only one walk is a good effort anytime," St. Joe coach Kevin Sheridan said.

Of course, the 10 hits didn’t hurt. Bub Waginger, Pat Malone, and Yaniko each went 2-4 while Eric Waginger, Yaniko, and Malone all homered.

"We hit the ball well and we had a lot of clutch hits," said Sheridan.

St. Joe went up 4-0 in the first.

With one out, Eric Waginger homered, Bub Waginger singled, stole second, and Yaniko singled.

Malone reached on an error, moved up on a stolen base, and Andy Stack beat out an infield hit as Malone score.

The Flyers pushed across three more runs in the second.

With two outs, Eric and Bub Waginger reach on errors to put runners on the corners. Bub Waginger stole second and Yaniko singled them home.

Yaniko moved up on a passed ball and scored on Pat Malone’ base hit.

"We got a quick lead and then I thought we got a little complacent," said Sheridan.

Each team scored twice in the fourth.

Richie Webb singled, Josh Harper reached on an error, and Webb scored on the overthrow.

Two outs later, David Martin walked and a run scored on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the inning, Bub Waginger doubled, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored when Yaniko grounded out. Malone then slammed a long home run to make it 9-2.

The Flyers final two runs scored in the sixth when Bub Waginger doubled and Yaniko homered.

Rock Hill scored twice in the seventh.

Martin singled, Heaberlin doubled, and two outs later Tyler Virgin had a two-run single.

Friday, St. Joe hosts Fairview, Ky., while Rock Hill travels to Portsmouth. Both games are at 4:30 p.m.
