The two key elements in softball are pitching and defense, and that’s just what the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers got Friday.

Katie Keller pitched a four-hitter as Ironton beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 4-1.

"Rock Hill has a pretty good team," Ironton coach Pete McCloud said. "We didn’t hit the ball as well as we have the first two games, but that’s going to happen.

"Katie pitched a real good game and we played pretty good defense behind her."

Ironton had nine hits led by Carly Isaac who went 3-for-3. Jessica Ensor and Rachel McClellan each batted 2-3.

Rock Hill got its run in the top of the first when Amanda Mays singled to start the game, and Bridgette Barker singled an out later. An error on the play scored Mays.

Ironton came back to take the lead for good in the fourth with a three-run rally.

Melissa Cielec walked and then Nicole King, Carly Isaac, and Rachel McClellan all singled.

The Lady Tigers got an insurance run in the fifth when Jessica Ensor, Carly Isaac, and McClellan all singled.

 

South Point 16-20, Coal Grove 0-8

SOUTH POINT – The South Point Lady Pointers got off to a fast start.

A real fast start.

South Point scored 36 runs in sweeping an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader from the Coal Grove Lady Hornets Friday.

South Point used the two-hit pitching of Tara Layne to win the first game 16-0. Layne struck out nine and walked just three.

Erica Griffith went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer over the fence to lead an 11-hit attack. Sarah Baise and Nekka Mains each went 2-3.

Cassi Ball and Johnson had singles for the only Coal Grove hits.

In the nightcap, Allison Perdue won her high school debut 20-8. She struck out seven and walked seven over five innings.

Baise was 2-2 to place the Pointers while Shannon James, Whitney Morrison, and Nikki Lewis were 1-1 and Mains 1-2.

South Point, 2-0 overall and in the OVC, plays at Ironton Monday.
