McDERMOTT – It’s all about getting better.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers and Lady Fighting Tigers each showed overall improvement Friday at the Northwest Invitational.

Ironton’s boys were second in the meet behind Waverly while the Lady Tigers placed third behind Waverly and Portsmouth, respectively.

"We’re getting better," Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said. "Jason Harmon had another good meet. He ran his best time in the 300 hurdles and went over 21-feet in the long jump.

"But our throwers improved, (Hugh) Scott ran well in the 400, and our 4-by-800 relay ran their best splits."

Harmon racked up 26.5 points to win meet high point honors. He won the long jump with a leap of 21-1, ran a 43.21 to place third in the 300 hurdles, and was second in the 110 hurdles at 15.02.

Harmon also ran a leg on the winning 4×100 relay team along with Michael Henry, Erique Bacon, and Jerry Massie that had a 44.98 clocking.

"Our exchanges could have been a little better. We can still get our time down," said Cronacher.

Bacon was second in the shot put with a 47-10 1/2 heave and Mark Gleichauf was fifth eith a 44-5 toss. Redgie Arden was second in the discus with a hurl of 136-8 1/2 and Gleichauf right behind at 136-4.

Massie ran a 16.8 to take fifth in the 110 hurdles and his 44.16 was fifth in the 300 hurdles. Henry placed sixth in the 100 dash with an 11.53 time and Scott’s 53.39 left him runner-up in the 400 meters.

Brad Washburn was third in the 800 at 2:09.2 and fourth in the 11600 with a 4:46 clocking.

Ironton’s 4×400 relay team of Ryan McClellan, Bacon, Scott, and Washburn had a 3:42 time to finish second.

Chris Haney, Daniel Murphy, Jeremy Garrison, and McCellan had a 9:08.1 time to place fourth int he 4×800 relay.

Rachael Perry led the Lady Fighting Tigers with a pair of first place finishes as she won the 100 meter dash at 12.7 seconds and the 200 dash at 27.2 seconds.

Ironton had two other first place finishes.

Ashley Neal won the 400 dash with a 1:04.44 clocking, and the 4×100 relay team of Sarah Herman, Christy Lilly, Alisa Philabaun, and Perry combined for a winning 52.22 time.

"Our 4×1 and all our sprinters ran really well, and Neal had her personal best. We’re progressing right on schedule," Ironton coach Tim Thomas said.

Herman, Lilly, Philabaun, and Perry placed second in the 4×200 relay (1:52.27) while the team of Marlie Ford, Amy Bunker, Philabaun, and Neal ran a 4:37 to place third in the 4×400 relay.

Lilly also finished third in the 200 (28.27) and fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4-6. Herman was third in the 100 dash (12.96) and 300 hurdles (51.65).

Desiree Coleman was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 27-4 and Shay Hannon took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 13-11 1/2.

Randa Collins was seventh in the 1600 at 6:29.01 and 3200 at 15:05.57.

Ironton will run in the Rock Hill Invitational Thursday.
