CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Greg Cronacher wanted a meet to challenge his Ironton runners. As it turned out, his Fighting Tigers were up to the challenge.

Ironton surprised its coach as the Fighting Tigers won the Charleston Gazette Relays Saturday.

"I expected to see some good individual performances.With the kind of competition that in this meet, I figured it would bring out the best in us. It brought out more than I expected," said Cronacher.

Ironton had 70 points with Doddridge County second with 64 points. Sissonville had 50 points to place third.

Jason Harmon had a big meet as he won the long jump with a leap of 21-7 1/2, and the 110 high hurdles with a 15.17 clocking. He also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles at 43.02, and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team.

The 400 relay team of Mike Henry, Erique Bacon, Hugh Scott, and Herman had its best time of the year at 45.0 seconds.

The 1600 relay team of Ryan McClellan, Brad Washburn, Bacon, and Scott had its best time of the year at 3:38.03 to win the event. Washburn and McClellan joined Chris Haney and Jeremy Garrison to place sixth in the 3200 relay with their best clocking of the season at 8:48.

Redgie Arden was third in the discus at 138-11 and Mark Gleichauf fourth with a 135-5 toss. Bacon was third in the shot put at 43-11 1/2.

Scott ran an 11.7 to place fourth in the 100 meters. Jesse Collins went 10-6 and was fourth in the pole vault.

Chesapeake’s Danny Wassell won two events. Wassell cleared 6-2 in the high jump and ran a snappy 50.5 in the 400 dash.

The Panthers Eric Myers was fifth in the discus 9134-3), Luke Beach third in the high jump (6-0), Ryan Slone sixth in the 400 (54.09), and Josh Dillon sixth in the 800 (2:06).

South Point’s Jarrod Smith placed second in the shot put (48-2) and the discus (148-9). Teammate Jason Garl won the pole vault as he cleared 13-7.

In the girls meet, Ironton was fifth overall which left Lady Tigers coach Tim Thomas pleased.

"The girls stepped up and gave good performances. Even if they didn’t place, they still had their best performances," said Thomas.

"I was real happy with our relay teams, Ashley Neal did a nice job for a freshman, and Rachael Perry, Sarah Herman, Alisa Philabaun, and Christy Lilly ran well."

Ironton’s 400 relay team of Herman, Lilly, Philabaun, and Perry ran a season’s best 52.09 to win the event. The same four had their best time in the 800 relay with a 1:49.56 clocking as they won that event, too.

Neal, Herman, Philabaun, and Lilly ran a 4:22.4 to place third in the 1600 relay.

Perry was third in the 200 meters at 27.7 and fourth in the 100 at 13.13 seconds. Neal was fourth in the 400 at 1:03.16.

South Point’s Deidre Layne was fifth in the 100 meters at 13.34. Chesapeake’s Laura King placed fourth in the shot put (33-0) and sixth in the discus (97-2).

Fairland’s Britani Keeney was fourth in the discus at 102-10 while teammate Amber Sparks took fifth in the shot put at 32-9 3/4.
