LUCASVILLE – When the South Point Pointers went to the faucet Tuesday afternoon, they turned on the hot water.

And hot best described the Pointers as they beat the Logan Elm Braves 6-2 in the Division II district semifinals.

"We played like we’re capable of playing today," Pointers coach Bob Lester said. "We can be hot or cold. This is the kind of effort you need in the tournament."

Senior pitcher Jared Waggoner was hot as he pitched a six-hitter, struck out seven, and walked just one.

"I felt really good. I really want to compliment my defense. They always play really good when I’m pitching," said Waggoner. "We came out with a lot of intensity, got a couple of runs on the board early, and set the tone."

South Point (17-7) will now play Northwest at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the district finals. Northwest beat Warren Local 9-1 on Monday.

Logan Elm, which scored nine runs in the seventh inning to upset Circleville 13-8 in the sectional finals, finishes the season 7-18.

South Point went in front with two runs in the first.

Brian Cremeans and Waggoner singled and the runners moved up on an outfield bobble. Cremeans then scored when the relay throw to third got free.

B. J. Belville grounded out to short as Waggoner scored to make it 2-0.

Shane Holsinger singled to start the inning and went to third on Jared Perdue’s base hit. Justin Eaches then put down a squeeze bunt to score Holsinger.

The Pointers went in front 4-0 in the fourth.

Holsinger walked, Perdue singled him to third, and Eaches had an RBI single.

The Pointers left the bases loaded.

Logan Elm came back to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth inning.

Josh Weaver singled to center and Kyle Davis had a base hit to right to open the inning. A wild pitch scored Weaver and sent Davis to third. Brandon Eveland hit a sacrifice fly to score Davis.

South Point came back

Belville had a base hit, Jamie Douglas walked, and after a double play erased Douglas, Josh Morrison had a pinch-hit single to score Belville.

Eaches led off the sixth with a double, moved up on a ground out, and scored on a base hit to left field by Cremeans.

The Pointers banged out 12 hits with Cremeans going 3-3, Eaches 2-2, Perdue 2-3, and Belville 2-4.

"Waggoner pitched a real good game, and Nick (Clay) caught a real good game. When we moved Eaches to the ninth slot, we seemed to getting a lot of production from him," said Lester.

Stevens and Davis each went 2-3 for Logan Elm.
