RIO GRANDE – Jason Harmon had plenty of good jumps. Robby Isaacs would gladly trade him for just one.

Harmon had no trouble jumping in the 21-foot range Saturday as he won the long jump event at the Division II district track meet and earned a berth in the regionals.

"Harmon did well today. Three of his four jumps he took were 21-feet or better. You can’t complain about that. He’s running from the long jump to the hurdles, so that’s tough on him physically and mentally," Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said.

Isaacs, the Chesapeake Panthers senior standout, was the defending state champion in the long jump as well as the 200 meter dash. He finished fourth in the 100 meter dash at the state meet.

But a reoccurring pulled hamstring has kept him out of competition for a month, and the inactivity took its toll on him at the district meet.

Isaacs’ longest jump was 18 feet which placed him seventh. Although he qualified for the 100 and 200 dash finals, he finished sixth in each event. Only the top four finishers qualify for the regional meet.

While Isaacs was the tough-luck story of the year, other area runners ran, jumped, and threw well enough to earn at least one more week of competition.

South Point’s Jarrod Smith, who already secured a regional berth in the shot put when he placed second on Wednesday, won the discus Saturday with a personal-best throw of 158-11.

Chesapeake’s Danny Wassell, who won the high jump Wednesday, qualified in the 400 dash as he finished second to Clayton Mayle of Federal Hocking in a photo finish. Mayle ran a 50.23 and Wassell had a 50.24 time.

Wassell’s teammate Ryan Slone was fourth in the 800 meter run with a 2:04.1 time, his best of the year.

Ironton had two runners advance in the 1600 meter run as Brad Washburn was second at 4:38.2 and Ryan McClellan fourth at 4:50.5.

"McClellan has done a marvelous job, and Brad ran really well today. I can’t remember the last time we had two runners get out in the 1600," Cronacher said.

Besides the long jump, Harmon qualified in the 110 high hurdles by finishing second at 15.36 seconds. Fairland’s Jack Girgis was fourth with a 15.66 time to move on to the regionals.

In relay events, Chesapeake’s Brad Fulton, Scott Perry, Josh Dillon, and Slone had a winning 8:29 clocking, their best, to win the 3200. The same four were second in the 1600 at 3:33.72.

South Point’s 400 relay team was third with a 44.8 time. Ironton’s 400 relay team, which has been under 44 seconds, mishandled an exchange in the preliminaries and was disqualified.

Wheelersburg won the meet with 89 points followed by Wellston with 82.5, Portsmouth 76, and Chesapeake fourth with 66.3 points.

The Ironton Lady Tigers and Rock Hill’s Jessica Kerns were the top performers in the girls meet.

Kerns, who was third in the long jump on Wednesday, was second in the 100 meter hurdles with a 15.65 time and second in the high jump at 5-2, two inches off the pace of Gallipolis’ Shanna Carter.

Ironton had one win, that coming in the 400 meter relay as Christy Lilly, Alisa Philabaun, Sarah Herman, and Rachael Perry had a 51.5 time.

The same quartet ran a 1:46.7 to place second in the 800 relay, and Lilly, Philabaun, Herman, and Ashley Neal set a school record with a 4:21.04 in the 1600 relay to finish third.

"We had a lot of personal bests," Ironton coach Tim Thomas said. "We had a school record in the 4-by-4, and Rachael tied her best time in the 100 and 200, and Sarah Herman had her best time in the 300 hurdles.

"Neal broke the school record in the 400, Philabaun was fifth in the long jump with her PR, and Christy Lilly had her best jump in the high jump. All five had several events, and they had big days and all came through."

Perry was third in the 100 (12.9 seconds) and 200 (26.9). Herman was fourth in the 300 hurdles with 50.41 seconds.

Fairland’s Amber Sparks won the shot put event with a throw of 33-4 1/2. Chesapeake’s Janelle McQuaid was third in the shot put with a heave of 31-10.

Fairland’s Chelsea Walls advanced to the regionals by finishing second in the 1600 with a 5:52.3 clocking.

Gallipolis claimed the district team championship for the fifth straight year with 151 points. Wheelersburg was second with 79 points and Ironton took third with 52 points.

All individual winners in a district event are All-District by the Southeast Ohio Track Coaches Association.

The regional meet is at 4 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Friday at Zanesville.
