CHESAPEAKE – In the past it has been names like Tony Fisher, Jamal Bradley, Tamar Slay, Brett Nelson, and Jeremy Bremmer

Now, it’s Roman Sato, Matt Marinchick, Eric Daniels, Darrion Scott, and Jay Hewitt.

The one thing all these names have in common is the fact they all are part of or have participated in the Ohio-West Virginia All-Star Series.

Fans can see the future stars Friday at Riverside High School in Charleston, W.Va., or Saturday at Chesapeake High School.

The girls game starts at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Contact coach Norm Persin (867-5958 or 740-682-6777) for the Saturday game tickets and Mike Price of Ravenswood High School for the Friday game tickets.

Fisher is now the starting tailback at Notre Dame. Bradley is a starter for South Carolina and led the SEC in 3-point goal percentage. Slay is a star for the Marshall Thundering Herd, Nelson plays for NCAA runner-up Florida, and Bremmer started for St. Bonaventure which nearly upset Kentucky in the NCAA tournament.

"We’ve had some big-time players before, and we’ve got some future players who are going to be stars in college and even the NBA," said Persin, the Ohio series director.

"Sato is one of the premier players in the country. He was the best player in the state this year. He had eight dunks and nine 3s in one game. That just shows how athletic he is."

Marinchick and Scott are both headed for Ohio State, Daniels will play at Kentucky, and Hewitt has signed with West Virginia. Sato has signed with Xavier.

"There’s not too many games out there where you can see this good of a collection of talent for five dollars," said Persin. "And not only are there some players going to big-name programs, but there’s a lot of talent here going to MAC (Mid-American Conference) schools. They’re good players."

Ohio’s team will feature Julius Johnson and Chester Mason who are headed for Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green State recruit Josh Almanson, and Maverick Carter who will attend Western Michigan.

Eastern Michigan signee Rick Cottrill will play for West Virginia.

The girls game has some quality players as well, including Indiana recruit Schelley Stahle and Dayton’s Jennifer Malnella on the Ohio team and Ohio University’s RaeRae Sayles on the West Virginia squad.

"The Ohio coaches have done a good job of getting better talent for this series," said Persin.

The local talent featured will have Rock Hill’s Michelle Matkins on the girls team and Brian Tennant on the boys squad.
