After all, they might say, that really only involves the businesses downtown.

Wrong.

The location of the Ironton-Russell bridge will directly impact the entire city of Ironton, specifically as it relates to the future of economic development in the region.

There is no question, a bridge that terminates in downtown Ironton will boost downtown business. Period.

Outside-the-city and regional development are great, but to remain healthy, Ironton must have an active and vibrant downtown. So, protecting our downtown is as important as attracting new industry.

Filling some of Ironton’s storefronts and the merchant spaces in the city building should be top priorities as city officials prepare to lead Ironton toward a new beginning.

In addition to that economic development work, officials should also consider some other work downtown. Landlords should be forced to repair structures that have seen better days and litter and cruisers that cause trouble on downtown streets should be removed.

But making sure that the Ironton- Russell bridge lands downtown is the most important first step.
