Event to help former South Point student

 

When South Point senior Dustin Harrison heard what happened to Daniel Hughes, it didn’t take long for him to start working on a plan.

Hughes, an Ohio State University freshman and South Point High School graduate, was riding his bicycle in early September, when he was struck by a dump truck. Since then, multiple tests, surgeries and an extensive hospital stay have kept Daniel and his family busy.

To help with the financial difficulties, Dustin got to work preparing a fundraiser to assist the family.

From 2 to 6 p.m. this Saturday at the former South Point High School football field, Dustin is hosting “Fall Festival for Daniel.”

With the help of 35 friends, Dustin will have games, inflatables, an auction, a dunk tank and food from Casa Grande, with 100 percent of the profit going to Daniel’s family.

“I’m trying to raise money to help his family out,” Dustin said.

The event is free for adults, and there is a $3 admission for children, which includes 16 tickets. Additional tickets are available for purchase.

“It’s a way for a lot of people to have fun and help the family,” Dustin said.

Dustin said that while he did have a few classes with Daniel in the past, his main reason he for having the festival is to pay him back.

“The reason I’m doing it is because Daniel did a lot for other people,” Dustin said.

He added that he has never done any fundraiser to this scale but has set a goal he will be proud to meet.

“My goal is $5,000,” Dustin said. “It would be amazing if that would happen.”

In the event of rain, the festival will be in the old gymnasium.
