A former Fairland football player is suffering, and former coaches and players are coming to the aid of the family.
Medical problems have caused some financial problems for the family of Dennis McMullen who is extremely ill. Former Fairland coach Jim Mayo and former player and coach Danny Casey have set up a trust fund to help the family.
Contributions can be mailed to First Star Rome Branch, P.O. Box 344, Proctorville, Ohio 45669. Checks or money orders can be made out to the Dennis McMullen Fund.
Additional donation canisters will be placed in local businesses in the Proctorville area.
For further information, contact Casey or Mayo.
Fan-tastic figures
While attendance figures aren’t final for this year’s Ohio High School Athletic Association football championship games, let’s look back at the attendance figures in last season’s finals.
The Ironton vs. Sandusky Perkins game in Division IV was the fourth highest total with 9,522 fans.
The total was greater than all three of this year’s Friday games.
Fraley scores big
Shawnee State’s 108-104 shoot-out win over Defiance last week saw five Golden Bears in double figures including former Rock Hill star Jeff Fraley.
Fraley, a sophomore, scored a career-high 19 points in the win including 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
Marshall adds UMass
Marshall University athletic director Lance West has announced that the Herd will play Massachusetts in football next season.
The UMass game will be in Huntington on Sept. 8, sandwiched between road games at Florida, Sept. 1, and Texas Christian, Sept. 15.
UMass is a Division I-AA school.
