In the summer of 2010, Lawrence County was hit with a massive storm that toppled trees, destroyed small buildings and created havoc for local municipalities and private citizens alike. The following year, the county got a Disaster National Emergency Cleanup grant of $2.1 million to hire people and purchase needed equipment to clean up much of the storm damage. This year, that grant was extended and the county will receive another $1.7 million.

“We hired 99 people last year and they are still working,” Trish Johnson, special programs coordinator, said. “We hired 45 in the first six months and then incrementally after that. We hope to hire 100 (with the extension), 50 now and 50 within six months.”

The jobs are 40 hours a week for six months (1,040 hours). The pay is $10.50 an hour.

“They will clean up debris and logjams on creeks that prevent the creeks from flowing properly,” Johnson said.

Johnson said applicants must be 18, have at least a general equivalency diploma (GED) or high school diploma and have a valid driver’s license or work permit. Those interested should apply in person at the WDRC on North Second Street. Applications are not being accepted by telephone.

Johnson said those people who need creeks cleaned out and other debris cleanup work performed should also call the WDRC and ask for Chris Damron. That number is 532-3140, extension 228.
