PEDRO -- Layoffs aren't good. Especially during the game.

Feeling the effects of an 8-day layoff, the Rock Hill Redwomen played inconsistently but still managed a 41-38 win over the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates Saturday.

Rock Hill (9-3) played solid defense the entire game, especially the first quarter as the Redwomen held Wheelersburg scoreless.

"We played well early, but then we let up and got complacent and we had a dogfight at the end. It's hard to turn it back on,"

Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds said. "I think the layoff hurt us. It's hard to stay sharp offensively, but our defense carried us. It was a good win."

Miranda Edwards had 15 points and Marie Bamer 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Redwomen. Bamer also had three steals while Rachel Hartwig had 8 points and six rebounds.

Kendra Massie scored 15 points to lead Whelersburg (5-9).

Edwards scored 5 points and Hartwig 4 as Rock Hill took a 9-0 first quarter lead.

Bamer had 6 points in the second quarter and Rock Hill held a 19-11 halftime lead.

The Redwomen managed just 8 points the third quarter as Wheelersburg got within 27-22.

But Edwards and Bamer scored 6 points each in the third quarter as Rock Hill maintained its lead.

The Redwomen were 10 of 15 from the line including 7 of 8 over the final 1:30 of the game as Wheelersburg was forced to foul. Edwards was 3 of 4 from the line while Julie Mootz and Bamer were each 2 of 2.

Wheelersburg's Maggie Howe hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to set the final score.
