It was probably one of the shortest regular Ironton City Council meetings ever and definitely one of the shortest in recent memory.

With nothing on the agenda, The city council Thursday had no work to do and convened and then adjourned its council meeting in less than five minutes.

Council president Mike Lutz said Mayor Rich Blankenship was absent because he was interviewing one of three candidates for wastewater treatment plant supervisor. The man who has that job, John Haskins, submitted his resignation two weeks ago.

“Are the three candidates Class 4 operators?” council member Aaron Bollinger wanted to know.

“They’re all Class 4,” Lutz replied. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency requires the city to have a Class 4 operator at its wastewater treatment plant.

Lutz commended the public works department for its job in repairing two water main breaks at the same time Wednesday afternoon.

“The crew on the break between Pine and Maple was impressive,” Lutz said. “It took a couple of hours to find the line because it was underneath a gas line. They had the water on before 7 p.m. They worked their tail ends off. I commend them.”
