It is a unique opportunity to get an in-depth education on law enforcement.

Lawrence County Sheriff Tim Sexton is offering a "Citizen's Police Academy."

"The academy will be an opportunity for citizens of Lawrence County to attend courses designed to increase understanding between citizens and law enforcement," Sexton said in a prepared statement. "The courses will provide an education and insight into the workings of the criminal justice system and the sheriff's office."

Topics include sheriff's deputies, funding and budgeting, criminal investigations, the duties and functions of the patrol, corrections and communications divisions, a jail tour, laws of arrest, domestic violence

and an optional

ride-along program and an optional class on firearms qualifications.

The class is free, but space is limited to 15-18 participants. A date for the academy has not been set. Participants must be at least 21 years of age with no criminal record. Additional requirements are listed on the application that can be obtained at the sheriff's office.
