COLUMBUS - Sugarcreek Garaway used defense to make it to the state tournament, allowing an average of just 33 points per game during the season.

The Pirates showed Thursday night that they can play a little offense, too.

Tyler Renner scored 36 points - 26 in the second half - and had 10 rebounds and five assists as Garaway beat Archbold 70-59 to advance to the Division III championship game.

After the Bluestreaks (22-4) were held to nine points in the second quarter and six in the third, they scored 28 in the fourth period as the game turned into a track meet.

Archbold had no answer for Renner. The 6-foot-6 forward, a first-team all-Ohioan, bulled his way inside repeatedly for easy baskets. When Archbold went to a full-court press in the second half to try to slow the Pirates (26-1) down, Renner helped Garaway break it repeatedly, taking passes at halfcourt and throwing over the top of smaller defenders to teammates in the frontcourt.

Renner scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, including seven in a row in little more than a minute of play. He made three straight layups and turned one of them into a three-point play as the Pirates took a 49-35 lead with 5:26 left.

Garaway shot 25-for-42 - 59.5 percent - and was 17-for-21 on free throws. Renner shot 13-for-17 from the field and 10-for-13 from the line.

The Pirates scored 38 points in the paint as Renner and John Regula camped out down low.

and scored from point-blank range. Sixteen of those points came in the fourth quarter as the Pirates repeatedly broke the Archbold press for easy fast-break baskets.

Dan Borcherdt led Archbold with 19 points. D.J. Selgo had 17 and Joel Ruffer 14. John Regula scored 14 points for Garaway and Ryan Gerber had 10.
