According to Ohio state law, every child who enters kindergarten must have a vision and hearing test as well as a physical examination.

Each child's parents or legal guardian must provide proof of the child's up-to-date immunization records, as well as a copy of the child's birth certificate.

Again this year, Ironton City School officials are offering a health fair to help parents navigate the tasks associated with getting their child ready to start school. School nurses and volunteers from the medical community will administer health and speech screenings, and teachers will assist parents in registering their child for class. The health fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 12 at West Ironton Elementary School. Parents may also register their child for kindergarten in the week leading up to the health fair, April 7-11.

"This is a good opportunity for all parents," West Ironton and Whitwell Principal Annette Massie said. "They can come, spend an hour or so, and get everything done. Come August, their child is ready to start school."

The health fair is also open to children who will attend St. Lawrence Elementary School.

Parents or guardians should bring with them their child's immunization record, birth certificate, custody papers, if necessary, and the child's social security number.
