Myers, Morris win top honors in steer show
ROME TOWNSHIP — The cow had a catchy name: “Hey Man.” But hey, you can call yourself anything you want if you weigh 1,352 pounds.
Cody Myers and Hey Man won the grand champion trophy Wednesday night in the steer show at the Lawrence County Junior Fair. Brenna Morris took the reserve champion trophy for her steer, Najo, who weighed in at 1,340 pounds.
Judge Dan Wells said he was looking for cows that are market ready, thick and muscular “with a lot of pounds to the rail,” only just a little fat to round it out. He found what he was looking for in the new show arena.
“For a county this size, this was very good quality,” Wells said.
Both Myers and Morris said taking time with each animal, walking, feeding, and otherwise tending to the animal helped them win honors.
“I washed him three times a day, walked him twice a day. It’s been hot so I walked him at six in the morning and about 11:30 at night,” Myers said.
Morris left the showing of her animal to her brother Chad. A recent accident with her animal required pins in her arm, leaving her unable to perform the pulling and tugging required in the ring.
