An Ironton woman is serving 30 days on home confinement after pleading no contest last month to charges of stealing flowers and figurines from two graves in the Woodland Cemetery.

Kathy Douglas, 42, of 155 Little Ice Creek Road,

appeared in Ironton Municipal Court April 17 to answer charges that she stole angel figurines and flowers off of the Woodland Cemetery graves of Shane Jones and James Stevens in late March.

After pleading no contest, Judge Clark Collins sentenced Douglas to 90 days in jail, but suspended all but three days of the jail stay. Collins sentenced Douglas to 30 days home incarceration and two years intensive supervised probation. She must refrain from entering either Calvary or Woodland cemeteries for two years. Collins also ordered Douglas to pay a $200 fine plus $75 court costs and make full restitution to the victims.

Coal Grove Police officer Jason Blumfield said Douglas' apprehension can be credited to some sleuthing by Shane Jones, grandfather, Roger Jones, who became concerned when items began disappearing off his grandson's grave.

Blumfield said Roger Jones allegedly saw Douglas come up to the grave with flowers, and put the flowers in the ground, but then leave with an angel frog figurine and another item. Jones then gave this information to the police. Blumfield said Douglas confessed to the incident.

"The real credit has to go to Roger Jones. He took his own time to go to the cemetery," Blumfield said. "He was very instrumental in helping us catch Kathy Douglas."

Blumfield said people who take items to adorn the graves of loved ones should mark them very specifically so that if they are stolen, they may be more easily identified.
