PEDRO -- In a record-setting meet, the Fairland Lady Dragons were only trying to set the record straight.

The Lady Dragons, who had just eight team members last year, let everyone in the Ohio Valley Conference know they were back on track as they won the league meet Friday night at Rock Hill High School as six new meet records were established.

Fairland racked up 122 points to outdistance runner-up Chesapeake which had 97 points. River Valley was third with 88 points followed by Rock Hill with 80, Coal Grove 71, and South Point 66.

"The girls did a great job," Fairland coach Mindy Chapman said. "The girls have worked hard toward this all year. I was pleased with everyone coming together and performing well.

"The underclassmen wanted it for the seniors. We've been down a few years. This was a big win for us."

Although Chapman admits she was confident her team could win the meet, she was a bit surprised with the relative easy fashion in which they accomplished their goal.

"I didn't expect the win to be that big. We had several girls injured who didn't practice, and we had to make some changes," Chapman said. "Jennifer Jones stepped in and got some big wins, and Jenni Ellingsworth improved her times. I knew what she was capable of."

Jones, who has signed to play softball at Marshall, helped out the track team in a big manner. She won the 400 meters and was second in the 200.

South Point speedster Porcha Ball ran a record 26.1 seconds to win the 200 meter dash to edge Jones by one-tenth of a second. But Jones set her own record in the 400 with a 58.8 clocking.

&uot;That’s only the second time this year Jennifer has run that race,&uot; Chapman said.

Coal Grove’s Emillie Sites cleared 8-feet to win the pole vault over teammate Alicia Kelley who also went 8-feet but was second on misses. The Lady Hornets Amber Leibee ran a 48.1 to set a new mark in the 300 low hurdles.

Chesapeake’s Veronica Perko ran a 2:30.9 to win the 800 meter run in record-setting time and also took first place in the high jump.

The Lady Panthers 4×400 relay team of Perko, Joy Mayenchein, Brittany Montgomery and Lisa Perry set an OVC record with a time 4:19.7.

Fairland’s Britani Keeney celebrated her commitment to the Marshall track team by winning the discus with a personal-best toss of 137-6.

&uot;She’s worked hard. She deserves the recognition she gets,&uot; Chapman said of Keeney.

Ellingsworth came away with meet high point honors as she won the 3200 and 1600 meter runs, placed third in the 800, and ran a leg on the winning 4×800 relay team. She finished with 28.5 points.

Ball was a double winner for South Point as the sophomore took the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Rock Hill’s Cassie Chaffins also took home two first place ribbons. She won the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump.
