Jeremy Sherrill would like to introduce himself — and reintroduce his congregation — to the community.

“We want to be a church without walls,” said Sherrill, the pastor of Greater Faith Apostolic Church said. “Our slogan is ‘Where you belong.’ We want everyone to be able to come here.”

To that end the church is hosting seven weeks of special afternoon services, each with a different theme, beginning Sunday with Family Day.

Sherrill, who has been the church’s pastor since December, came from a small community in Alabama where he had lived all his life. He has gotten to know his congregation, but so far has not met many from the rest of the community.

“I hope to get more and more acclimated to the community,” he said. “We’ve got our roots down in the church and the church has been extremely welcoming. Now that we’re more acclimated I think it’s time to start introducing ourselves to the community.”

Dubbed the Seven Super Sundays, the series will start with the Sunday after Easter. Sherrill hopes to continue the excitement that started with the holiday when the church had 60 visitors.

“We were very excited and pushed for them to come back,” he said.

During Family Day, Sherrill has asked his congregation to invite their families to the service and to a picnic afterwards at Paul Porter Park in Coal Grove.

Sherrill’s own family is planning to come up for the event as well.

The emphasis, he said, is “not only the immediate family but also the family of God.”

During Friend Day, which will be April 18, church members are encouraged to invite friends from work and school.

April 25 will be Baby Dedication Day when people can bring their babies and have them prayed for and dedicated to God.

May 2 will be Professional Day. During that event the church hopes to welcome area mayors, council members, judges, police officers and the like.

“I want to do my part to reach my community,” Sherrill said. “I think this is a good start to introduce folks to our church.”

On May 9, Mothers’ Day, the church will honor mothers.

Education Day will be May 16. During this service the church will honor schoolteachers as well as Sunday school teachers.

“It’s going to be a cool time,” Sherrill said.

The first six Sundays are all leading up to the last, Pentecost Sunday, which is May 23. Pentecost marks the 50th day following Passover in the Jewish tradition but for Christians it also marks the time when the Holy Spirit descended on the church.

“Pentecost Sunday is a very significant day for the church,” Sherrill said. Following Pentecost, the church will have revival with Rev. Sammy Sherrill, who is a cousin to Sherrill.

Each service will begin at 2p.m. The time has been changed to give those who go to church elsewhere the opportunity to attend.

Sherrill said he hopes to bring in new attendees during this time.

“We want them to come back and be a part of our church,” he said, adding that the church has a youth department, men’s and women’s ministries and more.

“We want to show the community what Greater Faith has to offer.”
