KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee forward Elgrace Wilborn was dismissed from the team Tuesday after he was charged with aggravated assault for hitting a teammate.

Wilborn, a junior from Springfield, Ohio, was arrested and charged June 6 with hitting Brandon Crump, Tennessee's starting center and his roommate, during an argument at their apartment June 1. Crump's jaw was broken.

''We have met with Elgrace and have decided to dismiss him from the basketball team based on our findings in this matter. I am disappointed that Elgrace's career at Tennessee had to end like this,'' coach Buzz Peterson said.

Wilborn issued an apology in a news release.

''I am sorry to Brandon Crump especially,'' Wilborn said. ''Also, I am sorry to his family for this incident.''

Wilborn averaged 2.9 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. Averaging 17 minutes, he was sixth in the Southeastern Conference with 1.55 blocked shots per game.

Wilborn told police he confronted Crump, a junior from Houston, in their apartment about comments Crump made regarding two 19-year-old women who were visiting. He said Crump became loud and bumped him in the chest. When Crump continued talking after Wilborn backed off, Wilborn said he struck him in the face, police said.
