WESTWOOD, Ky. -- It's been said that if you fail on too many chances, you'll pay for it.
The Coal Grove Hornets had to get out their checkbook Friday night.
Missing on two golden scoring opportunities, the Hornets ended up with a 31-6 setback at the hands of the Fairview Eagles.
Coal Grove (1-2) drove to the 1-yard line with a first-and-goal but failed to scored. The Hornets had another first-and-goal at the 1-yard line that stalled in the second half.
"That took a little steam out of us. We executed pretty well and had a nice opening drive. If we had executed better, we might have scored," Hornets coach Steve Cook said.
The Hornets defense held Fairview at bay until the first play of the second quarter when Jennings broke loose on a 77-yard touchdown gallop. Jennings ran for the conversion and it was 8-0 at the half.
The Eagles got a key score via the special teams when Bill Terry returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Jennings ran for the conversion and it was 16-0.
"We were in the game and they return a punt on us. That's when the momentum changed on us," Cook said.
Jennings went 27 yards for the next Fairview touchdown, and Bruce Gibson's run for the extra points extended the lead to 24-0.
The Hornet cut the deficit to 24-6 when quarterback Ryan Turvey scored on a 12-yard keeper.
But Fairview (3-0) answered with an insurance touchdown as Jennings went 1 yard for a touchdown. Tyler Evans kicked the point after.
Coal Grove had 230 total yards with 120 passing and 110 rushing.
"Justin Hyland played well on both sides of the ball, and Ryan Turvey and Patrick Roush had good games," Cook said.
