Two motor vehicle accidents on U.S. 52 Monday sent one pedestrian to the hospital after he was struck by a tractor trailer, but two others in an earlier accident escaped unharmed.

At around 5 p.m., Darin L. Corn II, 18, of 1220 Navajo Trail, Ironton, was on the north side of U.S. 52 when he walked onto the highway's westbound lanes near the Ironton/State Route 141 on-ramp, said Trooper Kevin Kobi of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. David K. Ankum, 60, of Hopewell was driving in the right lane and swerved into the left lane to keep from striking Corn, but ended up striking him anyway.

According to Ankum's statement, Corn kept running in front of the truck even when the truck swerved into the left lane, Kobi said. However, Corn later stated that he did not intentionally run out in front of the truck and that he was crossing the guard rail, headed toward a nearby convenience store, Kobi said.

Corn was transported to King's Daughters Medical Center where he is listed in fair condition. No citations have been issued at this time, and the incident remains under investigation, Kobi said.

In an earlier accident, two Kentucky residents escaped injury. Around 3 p.m., Amy N. Hines, 22, of Russell was driving eastbound on U.S. 52 while Clayton L. Harlow, 19, of Garrison was at a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 52 and County Road 1 in Sheridan, near the Coal Grove corporation limit and the bridge to Ashland, Ky. Trooper Tom Hacker of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Harlow failed to yield at the stop sign and was struck by Hines.

Both Hines and Harlow refused treatment at the scene. Harlow was cited for failure to yield.
