Though Virginia may claim to be the father of the U.S. president, Ohio can certainly make a good case for the title of presidential mother.
As the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents, Ohio has a lot of presidential history spread across its landscape that about 45 Ohio University Southern students will get the opportunity to experience.
Students in instructor Steve Call's Travel and Tourism classes and Bob Leith's history courses will get the chance for some hands-on learning on the upcoming "Education on Location" trip October 24-26.
The students will visit the homes, memorials, museums, graves and tombs of all eight presidents while doing a loop of the state.
"It should be very educational and enlightening," Call said. "I think it is something unique because of the itinerary. I have not heard of another trip that tried to do all this."
The first stop is Canton - the birthplace of
the 25th president William McKinley. Next on the itinerary is 20th president James Garfield's birthplace in Mentor.
Then it is on to Fremont, home of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president.
Marion County - the birthplace of 29th president Warren G. Harding - will be the next stop.
Cincinnati will provide a variety of attractions because it is the birthplace of the 27th U.S. president William Howard Taft, 9th president William Henry Harrison and 23rd president Benjamin Harrison.
The final stop before returning to Ironton is Georgetown to recognize 18th president Ulysses S. Grant.
Overall, Call is excited about what he thinks will be another tremendous trip to go with the ones in the past that have included Gettysburg, the Bahamas and more.
"It should be pretty interesting for a lot of folks because these are not your mainstream U.S. presidents," Call said. "I think if you would ask people on the streets, they would not know how many presidents are from Ohio."
