DEERING - A new flag and a new flag pole, but a timeless purpose.
A flag dedication is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Veteran's Day, at the Melvin Cemetery on Deering-Bald Knob Road in Deering. Elizabeth Melvin said everyone, especially veterans, are invited to attend.
"We're excited about this. This is a major achievement for this little cemetery. We got the flag and flagpole only a couple of months ago and decided to have a dedication on Veterans Day," Melvin said. "There are a lot of veterans buried in this cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1825 and there some are Civil War veterans."
Melvin said the dedication is meant to honor those who endanger and sacrifice their own lives
to ensure freedom for the rest of us.
"Many times over, we've forgotten our veterans, the price they paid and what they did for us. And we need to remember those who are paying that price now," Melvin said.
The VFW Post 2761 of Symmes Valley and the Symmes Valley Amvets 141 will provide the gunnery salute and color guard. Local musician Marty Smith will play "Taps" and
"Amazing Grace."
