SYBENE - Winter is almost here and so are the colds and flu that often come with it.

So the Lawrence County chapter of AARP wants to invite anyone age 50 or older to attend its annual health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Multi-Purpose Senior Center in Sybene for free flu shots and health screenings.

"Basically, seniors should come because it is a good preventative measure to take the screenings offered and they may find a problem that they were not aware of," said Marilyn

Grant Howard, president of the local AARP chapter.

In cooperation with King's Daughters Medical Center, Holzer Medical Center and other local health providers, 14 free health screenings will be provided along with 120 free flu vaccinations while supplies last.

"The local health providers have really stepped up to the plate," Howard said.

With the high cost of medical care, this is a good way to provide free services, Howard said. While the fair is not intended to replace regular visits to physician, it is a good form of referral service, she said.

"In AARP, we firmly believe that if you can detect something in its early stages and take preventative measures, you can help yourself remain healthy and happy," Howard said.

Screenings include glaucoma, blood/oxygen, hearing, cholesterol and glucose tolerance, pulmonary functions, bone density, muscle testing and acupressure, height and weight, blood pressure, sleep assessment, chiropractic and stress evaluations.

A liquid plus Glucose test is also available, but requires an appointment by calling 532-3534 or 867-4521. The test also requires the patient to undergo 10 hours of fasting with no food or drink other than water.

Last year, 277 people attended the health fair and Howard is hoping for an even better turnout this year.

"Some people found out that they had problems they weren't aware of," Howard said. "We had a couple who were sent to the doctor right away because of what the screenings showed."

Lunch will be provided by senior services from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a cost of $3.50.

Seniors who do not have transportation can call the Senior Center at 894-7569 to arrange for transportation to the fair.
