It is a way for errant library patrons to pay up and lend a hand to a needy neighbor at the same time.

Again this year, the Briggs-Lawrence Library's four branches will have Mitten Trees. Library patrons who owe fines may redeem themselves by bringing a hat, scarf or pair of mittens for the Mitten Tree. The clothing collected will be donated to area agencies that give clothing to the needy. In exchange for the donation, the library will waive the patron's fines.

"We are concerned about getting (the library's) items back, and this is a way to waive fees and get the items back and do something nice for the community," Briggs-Lawrence Library Adult Services Director Susan Wetter said. "In addition to collecting mittens, we are also collecting non-perishable food items. It's not as catchy and cute as the Mitten Tree but the library does this also.

The food will be donated to local food pantries.
