COAL GROVE - Taking a page out of the football team's playbook, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets did a double team on the St. Joseph Female Flyers.
Chelsea Markins and Tracy Tackett combined for 41 points as the Lady Hornets downed the Female Flyers 46-38 Thursday.
Markins had a game-high 26 points and Tackett added 15 points as Coal Grove ran its record to 3-0.
"Chelsey Markins had a good game. She stole the ball in the press and hit some shots. Tracy hit some free throws down the stretch. Our guards did a nice job," Coal Grove coach Nick Miller said.
Christina Harvey scored 24 points for St. Joseph.
"St. Joe has improved. Harvey did a nice job for them offensively and on the boards. They'll win some games," Miller said.
Coal Grove raced ahead 12-2 to start the game only to have St. Joseph close the gap to 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.
"We've had some kids sick and we had to use a lot of players earlier than we wanted," Miller said. "We didn't have a real good flow."
Tackett had 8 points in the first half and the Lady Hornets held a 21-16 lead.
Markins scored 10 of Coal Grove's 14 points in the third quarter but Harvey had 7 of her own to keep the Flyers within 35-26.
Harvey - who scored 17 points the second half - got 10 points in the fourth quarter as St. Joseph began to rally. But Coal Grove converted 5 of 8 from the line with Tackett making 3 of 5 down the stretch to seal the win.
