A string of incidents tied up traffic on Third Street in Ironton for a couple of hours Saturday morning and sent one man to the hospital.

Ironton police officer Shawn Rawlins said Jimmy Sturgill, 31, of South Point, was injured just after midnight as he was traveling northbound on Third Street. Rawlins said Sturgill's Chevrolet Blazer apparently struck a truck parked along the street in front of Buckeye Monument Co., and sent that truck into two other vehicles parked on the monument company lot.

Rawlins said that witnesses told authorities the parked vehicle was hit with enough force to cause it to be airborne for approximately 70 feet before it hit the other two vehicles.

"(Sturgill's) vehicle ended up rolling over on its side and Sturgill was trapped in the vehicle," Rawlins said.

The Ironton Fire Department was called to extricate Sturgill from his vehicle.

Sturgill was taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

Ironton police called for assistance from Coal Grove Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol as well as SEOEMS and the fire department.

While authorities were investigating this incident, another incident occurred on Third Street at its intersection with Vine Street. Rawlins said Kelli Sprouse, 23, of Ironton, apparently was trying to turn from Third Street onto Vine Street when her car struck a telephone pole. Sprouse was cited for failure to control and DUI.

Then, at approximately 2:35 a.m., a woman traveling south on Third Street apparently tried to avoid the roadblock caused by the earlier accident by driving over the curb on Third Street in front of the Auger Inn and attempting to drive on the sidewalk past the accident scene.

"She sat there for about five minutes and waited and then cut over the curb," Rawlins said.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Pamela K. Hitchler was cited for DUI, failure to obey traffic control and not wearing her seat belt.
