Mayor keeps doors open, extends hours

Mayor John Elam has backed up his campaign slogan that he would have an open-door-policy by working early and staying late.

In addition to inviting residents to contact him during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Elam has extended the mayor's office hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday for Walk-in Day.

Elam has tried to allow people to have direct contact with their mayor and show that he accessible to everyone.

"I wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to communicate with me," Elam said. "This is to accommodate the people that work the midnight shifts and the people that work until five in the evening."

No issue or concern is too small, Elam said.

"People can come in for a host of reasons," he said. "They can introduce themselves, express their opinions on the direction of the city and to just share their concerns."

After nearly two months in office, Elam said he can honestly say that he enjoys coming to work everyday. He credits some of the enthusiasm to the excellent staff that has thrown themselves into making the city a better place.

"Things are going well. This team I work with is just fantastic," he said. "We work well together. I think people are seeing that we have accomplished a lot."
