Ironton bangs out 13-3 win

One good swing deserves another.

After enjoying their best offensive output of the young season last Saturday, the Ironton Fighting Tigers followed that performance with an even better one as they spanked the Raceland Rams 13-3 in six innings Wednesday.

Ironton (3-3) banged out 15 hits to back the pitching of Adam Ferguson and Greg Linn.

"That's two games in a row we've hit the ball. Hopefully, we've found our swing and we'll develop some consistency," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said.

Ferguson (2-0) went the first four innings before a pulled leg muscle forced him to leave the game. Ferguson struck out four, did not walk a hitter, yielded one earned run and gave up four hits.

Linn came on to record his second save with two innings of work, striking out three, walking one and allowing one earned run.

"Adam threw well again. I've been real pleased with his effort," Lewis said. "Greg has thrown well every time out. He's doing a good job."

Raceland (4-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Thomas Toliver got a bunt single, stole second and came home on Jeremy Darby's base hit.

But Ironton came back to take the lead for good at 2-1 in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Kevin Williams walked and Josh Adkins singled. Dennis Gagai grounded out to move the runners up a base and Nick Collins followed with a two-run single.

The lead went to 3-1 in the third inning when Adkins was safe on an error and Gagai tripled to right field.

The Fighting Tigers pushed across three runs in the fifth inning to build a 6-1 lead.

Josh Sands was safe on an error, stole second and scored on Adkins' base hit. Gagai doubled to put runners at second and third. Collins then delivered his second two-run single of the game.

The Rams scored twice in the top of the sixth on a double by Tyler Boyles, two Ironton errors and a base hit by Blake Morris.

Ironton answered with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to create the mercy-rule win.

Dustin Preston singled and Ryan Walker reached on an error to put runners at second and third. Sands singled in one run and Williams singled to drive in another run.

Josh Adkins followed with a three-run homer to make it 11-3.

Gagai doubled and went to third base on Brigham Waginger's base hit. Waginger stole second base and Patrick Kouns singled home the final two runs.

Adkins was 3-4 with four runs batted in. Gagai was 3-4 and Nick Collins was 2-4 with four RBI. Waginger also went 2-4.
