AID - Lori Harmon could probably make a living throwing darts.
Harmon was throwing darts at the Portsmouth East Lady Tartans Thursday as she fired a perfect game as the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings completed a sweep of a Southern Ohio Conference doubleheader, 9-1 and 6-0.
Harmon struck out 14 batters in the second game shutout win. Lady Vikings coach Jeff "Odie" Estep marveled at Harmon's control.
"She was pinpointing it today," Estep said. "She had command of all her pitches and she put them right where she wanted them."
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Vikings scored twice.
Kayla Bowman singled, Rebecca Capper doubled and Erin Martin grounded out as a run scored. Megan Coomes hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
Symmes Valley put the game out of reach with four runs in the fifth inning.
Cassie Myers walked and Stephanie Burns and Harmon singled for a run. A passed ball moved the runners up a base and Bowman hit a sacrifice fly.
Capper walked and Martin was safe on an error as a run scored. Capper took third on a passed ball and scored when Jodi Black hit into a fielder's choice.
In the first game, Christine Crabtree got the win with relief help from Harmon. Crabtree left the game in the fifth inning due to an injury. Crabtree struck out five and Harmon seven. Neither pitcher walked a batter.
The Vikes got a run in the first inning when Myers walked, Burns hit into a fielder's choice, Harmon grounded out as the runner moved up and Bowman had an RBI single.
East got a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game, but the Lady Vikings scored in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.
Megan Coomes walked with one out, stole second, then scored on two passed balls.
Symmes Valley erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning.
Burns, Harmon and Bowman all walked to load the bases. Capper walked to force in a run, Martin hit into a fielder's choice and Coomes was hit by a pitch as another run scored. Brittney Scott walked to send in another run, Myers singled in a run and Harmon had a two-run single.
Symmes Valley is 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the SOC.
