Fighting Tigers prove very taxing to Greenup County

LLOYD, Ky. - You could tell it was the tax day. The Ironton Fighting Tigers waited until the deadline drew near before cashing in.

After falling behind early, Ironton scored all its runs in the fourth and fifth innings and beat the Greenup County Musketeers 7-4 Thursday.

"The big thing is we came back," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "We were a little flat and we struggled early, but once we got going we did a nice job hitting the ball."

Ironton (4-3) banged out 13 hits, six going for extra bases including a home run by Dustin Preston.

The late offensive explosion enabled Kevin Williams to even his record at 1-1. Williams went the distance, striking out eight and not issuing a walk. He gave up just seven hits.

"Kevin pitched really well. He was throwing strikes and getting ahead of hitters," Lewis said.

Williams threw 72 strikes among his 91 pitches. All four runs were unearned.

The Musketeers (3-6) went up 1-0 in the first inning when Darren Hayden singled, stole second, took third on a hit by Derrick Latimer and came in to score on an error.

Greenup built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third inning.

Boomer Pass was safe on an error and went to second on a sacrifice. With two outs, Brad Gillam singled in a run.

Joe Uhl followed with a two-run double and Chris Kouns had a run-scoring base hit.

Ironton got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Preston after a walk to Patrick Kouns.

The Fighting Tigers pushed across five runs in the fifth inning.

Williams doubled, Josh Adkins was hit by a pitch and Dennis Gagai had an RBI single. Nick Collins doubled to drive in the tying run and Brigham Waginger singled to give Ironton a 6-4 lead.

Two outs later, Ryan Walker singled as Waginger scored the final run.

Williams did the rest as he retired the final 11 batters.

Williams, Gagai, Preston and Walker all went 2-4 to spark the offense.
