ASHLAND, Ky. - For the last 13 years, the ladies of Ironton Jazzercise

have carried on a tradition that is a testament to their community service - as well as their perseverance.

Since 1992, the ladies have walked as a group in the annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica in Ashland, Ky.Jazzercise instructor Mary Williams said the group began walking for March of Dimes after a student in her class, Nichole Hicks, came to her with the idea.

"I worked at K-Mart when I was in college and K-Mart was always really big in March of Dimes. When I got into Jazzercise, with us being into exercise, I thought this would be a good thing," Hicks said. "I've always liked March of Dimes. I have two kids and I'm

fortunate they're healthy. As a teacher, I see some kids with problems and I always want to help them."

Williams said the 20-member group usually raises between $700 and $2,500 a year for the March of Dimes. Not only do the women make the 6.2-mile trek through the streets of Ashland, but they also get the mood going by leading warm-up exercises just before the volunteers begin walking.

What brings the ladies back, year after year?

"We're just dedicated to helping babies,"Williams said. "I believe in the March of Dimes."
