When it meets Thursday night, Ironton City Council is expected to discuss and possibly re-tool the vendor fee that was enacted last summer.

The ordinance, enacted in July 2011, authorizes the entity hosting a public event to collect fees from vendors who set up during the event. An example would be the food booths and other sales venues that set up during Rally on the River. There was some question at the time as to whether the city could enforce such an ordinance and how it would enforce it.

Council President Mike Lutz said to his knowledge, only one person was cited last year under the vendor ordinance and as far as he knows, the case was not upheld in court. He said one of the problems with the ordinance is that there are no apparent consequences for those who ignore it.

“We need something that is enforceable and equitable to all parties,” Lutz said. “We need to bring it back and discuss it and fix it to where it makes sense.”

Council will also discuss a plan to purchase five new dumpsters.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. A city council finance committee meeting is set for 5:50 p.m. Both meetings are on the third floor of the Ironton City Center.
