Judy Mills can say honestly she loves her job so much that she would do it for free - in fact she actually does.

An Ashland native who now calls Ironton home worked at the Ironton Senior Center on Park Avenue for three years but lost the job because of budget concerns. Since September, Mills has continued to visit the center from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. five days a week to volunteer her time and pitch in where needed.

"I just love the opportunity to work with seniors," she said. "Ever since I was young, I loved to be around them."

Mills does a little bit of everything at the center including serving food, working the desk, and anything else that is needed.

"She selflessly volunteers her time everyday," site administrator Connie Lake said. "She is just tremendous, she really is."

Always in need of more volunteers,

Lake said she wishes she had a few more like Mills.

"She worked here before I came, so she really understands the running of things," Lake said.

Since her husband has passed away and her children are grown, Mills said volunteering helps keep her active. She has also volunteered her time at the Sybene senior center and for a variety of special activities.

"It keeps me going. It keeps you mentally alert," Mills said. "(Volunteering) is so fulfilling in my life."

When asked what keeps her doing it every day, Mills is quick to respond.

"Because I love them," she said as she motioned toward the seniors in the cafeteria. "Just the people."
