CHESAPEAKE - A jump start was the spark the Chesapeake Panthers needed.

Starting with the opening kickoff, the Panthers put their offense in gear and routed the Warren Local Warriors 45-6 Friday.

"We played pretty well," Panthers coach Phil Davis said. "We got a little spark early and took it from there."

Mike Stapleton ran the opening kickoff back to the 8-yard line and the Panthers Keith Marcum scored on the next play.

However, Davis said the fast score had its drawbacks.

"We got the feeling that it was going to be easy and we made some mistakes. But we got it back together. We had some penalties that stopped some drives, but we can't complain too much," Davis said.

Marcum finished with 101 yards on nine carries and Jackson Caynor had 61 to lead the ground game for Chesapeake, now 3-2.

Quarterback Caleb McComas hooked up with end Dustin O'Brien for a pair of touchdown passes.

"This is as well as we've played offensively," Davis said. "The defense did well. Their score came late."

Marcum had a 4-yard scoring run in the second quarter that extended the lead to 12-0. McComas then hit O'Brien with scoring strikes of 18 and 9 yards as the lead grew to 24-0 at the half.

Mark Roby had a 15-yard burst for a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 30-0 and Cory Methax ran 1 yard for another TD. Cody Methax kicked the conversion and it was 37-0.

Warren (1-4) finally broke into the scoring column on a 20-yard run by Josh Bebe late in the third quarter.

Chesapeake's second unit capped the scoring as Jason Caynor ran 25 yards for a touchdown. Terry Brown passed to Vernon Browning for the conversion.
