McARTHUR - One touchdown was all Vinton County needed to take the sting out of the visiting Coal Grove Hornets.

The Vikings added the other two touchdowns just for good measure as they blanked Coal Grove 19-0, Friday night dropping Coal Grove to 3-2 on the season.

"We had a couple of opportunities to score early," said Coal Grove coach Dave Lucas. "We had problems moving the ball when we needed to."

Vinton County's Chris Bethel put the Vikings on the board with a 22-yard TD run in the first quarter. Greg Powell kicked the conversion and it was 7-0.

Coal Grove held it close until the third quarter when the Vikings Scott Boyer recovered a fumble and returned it 55 yards for a TD. The run for the conversion failed, leaving Vinton County in the lead, 13-0.

Michael Barney scored the Hornets final score on a 7-yard TD scamper.

"Their defense played exceptionally well under pressure," Lucas said. "They made some big plays that stopped us."

Coal Grove was held to 188 total yards, while Vinton County logged 251 total yards. Hornets back Justin Hyland gained 133 total yards to lead the team. Hyland churned up 117 yards on the ground and hauled in three passes for 16 yards.
