SOUTH POINT - There will be no sweep this season.

Last season, the Chesapeake Panthers lost only two regular season games, both to the South Point Pointers.

While there was dominance again Friday night, it was the Panthers this time as they rolled past the Pointers 71-34 in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

"Being a league game and being on the road, you figure they're going to be tough. But our kids came out and battled and got the lead and settled into our game," Panthers coach Norm Persin said.

Trent Finley scored 15 points and Brennan Hall 14 to lead the deep offensive lineup of the Panthers that saw nine players reach the scoring column.

"We played our starting group a little longer because they have to. We have to get some continuity going. We haven't been able to keep them on the floor the first couple of games," Persin said.

J.T. Terry had 9 points and Chase McWhorter 8 to pace the Pointers, 0-4.

Chesapeake bolted to a 16-2 lead to start the game before the Pointers managed to close the gap to 17-7 at the end of the quarter.

But the Panthers limited the Pointers to just 4 points in the second quarter and built a 28-11 halftime cushion as Finley drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"(Brent) Ransbottom, (Matt) Whitmore and Hall all played well inside. South Point's strength was inside and we took that away," Persin said.

"South Point is a young team and they're going to get better. They'll be able to compete with teams in our league. They have some good, young talent."

Chesapeake's offense erupted for 23 points in the third quarter and pushed the lead to a commanding 51-20.
