WILLOW WOOD - Looks aren't everything.

Although they played worse than desired, the Symmes Valley Vikings still got the results they wanted with a 56-47 win over the South Gallia Rebels Tuesday.

The Vikings missed 23 shots in the paint and had 21 turnovers but still managed to get their first win in two games.

"We didn't play well, but I'll take a win any time," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said. "If you looked at the overall stats, you'd think we would have lost. But our kids played hard."

Michael White and Chase Higgins scored 9 points each to lead the Vikings. Justin Holland had seven rebounds, and Alex Burnett and Kyle Meadows had six rebounds apiece. Matt Owens had four steals and two assists.

Curt Waugh scored 15 points and David Bayless 12 for South Gallia.

Despite the scoring, Carpenter was more pleased with the team's overall defensive play.

"(John) Wiseman and (Derrek) Cremeans are starting to step up and play some defense," Carpenter said.

Meadows scored 6 points in the first quarter to help the Vikings go up 15-10.

Waugh got 7 points in the second quarter as South Gallia rallied to within 27-22 at the half.

Symmes Valley took a 32-27 after the third quarter and held on in the fourth quarter for the win although Jerold Cade scored all 7 of his points for South Gallia.
