Federal Hocking rallies late past cold-shooting Lady Hornets, 68-63

COAL GROVE - It was like an old fishing story. You should have seen the one that got away.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets headed into the fourth quarter with a four-point lead, then struggled from the field as the Federal Hocking Lady Lancers rallied for a 68-63 win Saturday afternoon.

After leading by as many as 8 points, the Lady Hornets managed just two field goals in the fourth quarter as they scored 11 points, seven on foul shots.

"In the fourth quarter we could just not make a basket," Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "But for most of the game, our girls played really well."

Chelsea Markins led Coal Grove with 27 points. Samantha Hall added 18.

"Chelsea lit it up the first half and then they started double teaming her the second half," Miller said. "Hall did a nice job and she was up against their big girl the whole game."

Federal Hocking 6-foot center Andrea Stover scored 22 points. Kelsey Lackey scored 16 while Ashley Johnson and Terri Wolfe had 11 each.

The Lady Lancers led 24-16 at the end of the first quarter as Lackey scored 8 points. Markins got 10 points for Coal Grove including two 3-pointers.

The Lady Hornets rallied to tie the game 32-32 at the half, then pulled away to a 52-46 lead after three quarters as Markins went 8 of 8 from the line.

Natalie Williams sank 4 of 4 from the line in the final two minutes to seal the win over the Lady Lancers.

In the reserve game, Coal Grove fell 31-28. Brittany Harrison led the Lady Hornets with 13 points.

Coal Grove plays at Rock Hill Thursday.
