CHESAPEAKE — If Aaron Rice were a fisherman, he would be talking about the one that got away.
Missed plays by the Chesapeake defense helped the Cabell Midland (W.Va.) Lady Knights rally for a 6-5 win over the Lady Panthers Tuesday.
“If we make a catch here or there, we win the game,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice. “We basically gave them four runs.
“But we played one of the top teams in Kentucky to a 1-1 tie in 13 innings on Monday and we had the lead and a chance to win against the No. 5 Class AAA team in West Virginia the last two days.”
Midland scored four times with Chesapeake’s help in the second inning.
Julia Hightower’s fly ball fell for a double and an error on another fly ball scored the first run. Colleen Nash singled for a run, Chelsea Carroll doubled for two more runs and Morgan Zerkle had an RBI single.
Chesapeake (13-7) got a run back in the fourth inning when Sarah Mayo singled, stole second base and scored on a throwing error.
The Lady Panthers scored five runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
Sarah Rice singled, Allison Chapman hit into a fielder’s choice, Casey Kirk singled and Mayo had a run-scoring hit. Sidney Boyle walked and Courtney Heffner drilled a two-run double.
But Midland got two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs.
Mallory Pertee hit an 0-2 pitch for a double to score Zerkle who had singled with one out. Sydney Kaplan singled to drive in Pertee with an insurance run.
A weary Chapman took the loss as she had just one strikeout a day after pitching 13 innings and striking out 17 in a 1-1 tie with Ashland, Ky.
