Rebels use rebounding to rally past Flyers, 46-45

St. Joseph Flyers head coach Kevin Hacker could see the reason his team lost 46-45 to the South Gallia Rebels just as easy as looking through glass.

Backboard glass, that is.

The Rebels won their 12th straight as they rallied from 10 points down on the strength of offensive rebounding Wednesday.

South Gallia pulled down 16 offensive rebounds and cleaned the glass with 41 rebounds overall to 33 for the Flyers and improved to 13-3 on the season.

"They killed us on the boards," Hacker said. "We let them have too many second shots. We've been doing a good job of limiting teams to one shot, but South Gallia did a nice job. They're a good team."

The Flyers (3-12) saw their upset bid slip away in the final four minutes of the game.

South Gallia led 6-4 with 5:44 left in the first quarter, but the Flyers took an 8-6 lead on a putback shot by Ryan Staton with 4:13 to play in the first quarter and they led the rest of the game until Gerald Cade made a foul shot with 1:44 to play that put the Rebels up 44-43.

Cade added another foul shot 10 seconds later only to have Kurt Jordan follow up his own shot for the Flyers and tie the game at 45-45 with 1:15 to play.

Each team missed scoring chances and then Bennie Fulks was fouled with 43 seconds to go. Fulks hit the first of two shots and the 46-45 lead stood up as the Flyers missed two close range shots just before the final buzzer.

"We had our chances," Hacker said. "But we're getting better and that's been our goal since the beginning of the season. Hopefully, this will carry over to our next game."

Michael Basedow hit a 17-footer to put the Flyers up 17-7 late in the first quarter and it was 17-9 at the end of the quarter.

After trailing 26-17 at the half, the Rebels got within 28-25 when David Bayless followed up a missed shot with 2:55 left in the third quarter.

But the Flyers matched their biggest lead when Staton made a layup with 1:32 to go in the third quarter and it was 35-25.

Curt Waugh and Cade scored to close out the quarter and get the Rebels within 37-31.

Staton and Jeremy Addis scored to start the fourth quarter and the lead was back to 10. But the Flyers offense began to disappear as they made just 1 of 10 shots the rest of the quarter.

"We shot well early, but then we got away from our offense and started to fall in love with the long jumper. We need to attack the basket more," Hacker said.

Staton had 13 points and six rebounds and Basedow 12 points and five rebounds to lead the Flyers.

Cade had 18 points and 11 rebounds - both game highs - to lead South Gallia. Fulks added 9 points and seven rebounds.

In the reserve game, South Gallia won 37-36 as Michael Pope had 11 points and Ryan Geiger 10. St. Joseph was led by Jerrod Laber with 11 points and Ryan Waginger added 10.
