PROCTORVILLE - Coal Grove coach Darrell Humphreys asked for a "do over."

Trailing by six points early, Humphreys called a time out and told his players to start playing the way they were capable.

They did just that as they went on a 32-9 run the rest of the first half and posted a 61-44 Ohio Valley Conference win Friday over the Fairland Dragons.

"I told them I had seen enough of this and the kids responded. The second quarter we played our best quarter of the year," Humphreys said.

Fairland hit 4 of 6 shots to start the game and open up a 12-6 lead at the 2:23 mark. Humphreys called a time out and the Hornets returned to the court and tied the game at 12-12 to end the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hornets outscored the Dragons 26-9 and finished the half with a 32-9 run following the time out to lead 38-21. Randy Wise scored 9 points, Jim Lemon 7 points and Adam Bare 5 for the Hornets.

"I told them I had seen enough of this and the kids responded. The second quarter we played our best quarter of the year," Humphreys said.

Fairland hit just 2 of 18 field goal attempts in the second quarter while the Hornets were 9 of 12. For the game, Fairland

was 15 of 69 for 22 percent.

"After they called time out, we lost all our intensity," Fairland coach Chad Belville said. "And if we had been standing on the beach, we couldn't have thrown the ball in the ocean."

Wise had 5 points in the third quarter as the Hornets pulled away to a 49-29 lead.

Todd Maynard hit a 3-pointer and converted a 3-point play, and Zach Pemberton also had a 3-point play to begin the fourth quarter as Fairland cut the spread to 49-38.

But Wise sank 6 of 8 from the foul line as the Hornets pulled away to the easy win.

Wise finished with 20 points to lead Coal Grove (8-8, 5-3). Lemon had 13 points and 14 rebounds, Bare 12 points and seven rebounds and Justin Hyland had seven rebounds.

"Hyland turned his ankle pretty bad in the second quarter but he said he could play and he got most of those rebounds on a bad leg," Humphreys said.

"Give credit to Fairland's kids. They didn't quit. But our kids did a good job of holding their composure."

Josh Johnson led Fairland (3-15, 2-6) with 12 points and Maynard added 9. Pemberton had four rebounds.
