PEDRO - Taking time off doesn't take the edge off for the Rock Hill Redmen.

Despite a week-long layoff due to the weather, the Redmen banged out 15 hits in a 7-4 win over the Chesapeake Panthers Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"We played pretty good for being off a week. We got in the groove and got some hits," Redmen coach Barry Litteral said. "They made some nice diving catches in the outfield that kept us from scoring any more runs."

Leading the Redmen offense was K.C. Christian who went 3-for-4. Justin Lavender was 2-4 and J.C. Murnahan 2-3.

The Panthers had 12 hits with Jeff Gilkerson going 3-4 while P.J. Rase, Keith Marcum and Matt Rowe were all 2-4.

Chesapeake took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Rase doubled and Keith Marcum singled for a run. Gilkerson singled and Matt Whitmore doubled for the second run.

Rock Hill tied the game in the second inning.

Nathan Wagner singled, stole second and scored when Mike Williams singled. With two outs, Murnahan doubled home Williams.

Chesapeake took a 3-2 lead in the third inning when Gilkerson tripled and came home on a one-out ground ball by Whitmore.

The Redmen tied the game again in the fifth inning when Matt Wilson doubled and Lavender singled.

Rock Hill scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Nick Howard singled to start the inning and Murnahan followed with a base hit. Christian bunted for a hit and on the overthrow at first base both runners scored with Christian reaching third base.

Lavender singled home Christian, Wagner walked with two outs and Williams singled to load the bases. Mark Anderson then walked to force home the final run.

Chesapeake tried to rally in the seventh inning but the rally fall short as the Panthers managed just one run.

Gilkerson led off with a doubled and scored on a dropped fly ball.

Wagner got the win as he struck out three and walked only one.

"Nathan has been pretty consistent all year not walking people. He did a good job working out of some jams and we played good defense behind him," Litteral said. "Murnahan did a nice job behind the plate and he hit the ball pretty well."

Rock Hill, 9-4 and 4-4 in the OVC, hosts River Valley Tuesday and travels to Fairland Thursday.
