Even a dropped baton couldn't slow down the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers.

Megan Crockrel and Jessica Waddle dropped the baton during the first exchange of the 4×200 meter relay Saturday at the Charleston Gazette Relays.

But with coach Tim Thomas yelling to get the girls back on track, the quarter not only recovered but took first place with 1:53.13 time.

Also on the relay team are Ciara Taylor and Mandi Boykin.

The same foursome combined to win the 4×100 meter relay. The quartet of Rachel Walker, Katie Washburn, Crockrel and Taylor claimed first place with a 4:31.76 clocking in the 4×400 relay.

Tigers came away with a second place finish behind Winfield.

"The girls ran well. We were missing a couple of girls that could help us overall, that might have got us a few more points, but we're pretty satisfied with our performance," Thomas said.

The South Point Pointers boys track team was second in the Class AA division of the Gazette Relays. Ironton tied for sixth place.

Chris Smith won the discus with a toss of 148-10, the only first place finish for the Pointers.

Steve Leighty was second in the long jump and third in the pole vault and Benji Smith second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.

The Fighting Tigers' Mark Carter had his best time of the year at 53.12 as he took fifth in the 400 meters. John Pemberton was fifth in the shot put with his best toss of the year (46-4) and also placed fourth in the discus.

Ironton's relay team of Mark Carter, D.J. Carter, Shawon Miller and Craig Stamper was fourth in the 4×100, second in the 4×200 and fifth in the 4×400.

"Our relay teams ran pretty well and we didn't even have (Shane) Kerns on them," Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said. "Shane jumped pretty well in the long jump, but has an injury and we had to hold him from the relays."

Kerns was fourth in the long jump.

On Friday night, the Chesapeake Panthers and Gallipolis Blue Angels won their respective boys and girls meets at the Fairland Invitational.

Chesapeake won the title by riding the performance of Jeff Thornburg who took meet high point honors.

Thornburg won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and was second in the long jump. Teammate Chad Simmons won the long jump.

Brent Ransbottom cleared 6-4 to win the high jump and teammate Dustin O'Brien was second for Chesapeake. Caleb McComas was first in the 800 run.

Coal Grove's Randy Pemberton won the shot put and discus while Rock Hill's Jason Massie was first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

The South Point Lady Pointers were second behind Gallipolis despite the effort of Sarah Lee won took high point honors.

Lee won the 100 meter dash and high jump while taking second place in the 200 meters and long jump.

Fairland's Brittany Brunty remained unbeaten this season in the 800 meter run. Teammate Bethany Barbour won the shot put and discus.
